The art of compromise?

I was watching the presidential debate the other night and as each of the candidates struggled with his answers it got me to thinking how much different these two guys were from who they started out to be at the beginning of the process.

I wondered if Obama ever wondered if he was still the same guy he was as a community organizer and I wondered If McCain ever was worried he was drifting away from the man he’d been in the Senate for those many years.

What is clear to me is that the process makes it really difficult for anyone to remain true to himself and his ideals and still win.

I once heard it said that politics is about the “art of compromise.”  That may be true. However, it’s a shame that the first thing a person must compromise to be president is himself.
